I got sent the link for this today & I haven't watched it yet, but you know a lecture by Dennis Coffey is going to be the shit. Thanks to Davide for sending me the details.
WATCH THE LECTURE HERE
Below is what the Red Bull Music Academy site had to say about the lecture:
It started in late 1968 with a marvelously fuzzed-out guitar riff at a Motown recording session. But Dennis Coffey’s electrifying axe-for-hire didn’t just fuel the Temptations’ psych soul classic Cloud Nine (amongst countless other Hitsville hits), it staked a counter-culture freak flag in Berry Gordy’s Sound of Young America, and helped usher in an era of ultimate breaks and beats that reigned supreme through the ‘70s. Coffey and his Detroit Guitar Band’s repertoire of funk bombs – Scorpio, Getting It On, Son Of Scorpio, Ride Sally Ride, Theme From Black Belt Jones, etc. – enjoyed much-deserved prolonged life when the likes of Kool Herc and Afrika Bambaataa started spinning them at South Bronx park jams late in the decade. But by then Coffey and partner Mike Theodore had already gone on to produce and record a number of disco and Loft classics (C.J. & Co.’s We Got Our Own Thing and Devil’s Gun, as well as his own Wings Of Fire) that bookend-ed the era before returning to his native Detroit. His distinctive fretwork now sample fodder on too many digi-age tracks to keep track of, Dennis still resides back home, where he gigs with great frequency and popularity, forever the pride of the Motor City.

All of the files on this site are hosted by zshare. I have noticed that the download links don't work anymore. I read on a forum that due to them installing a new server all files uploaded before the 14th of October no longer work. I just uploaded something today & it works fine, so this may be the case. I will start to re-upload some of the files again, I will change the link to say "LINK RE-POSTED" when a file has been updated so that people know which files have been re upped.

Promises to be a good night, so if you are in the area come through & enjoy the disco beatdown.

Sorry for the lack of posts recently. I've been away in the USA this week visiting people in Chicago & NY. I met loads of cool people, had some good food, drank loads & picked up some good records (perfect trip really). Big City Records is a great shop, if you are ever in NY be sure to check it out. I saw Lord Finesse in there digging for beats. Picked up a few nice records in Chicago too. Thanks to all the people who hooked me up while I was there. I will post a mix with some of my new records in the next few days. I have put a few of my pictures from the trip below (thanks to Connie & Boogie for sending me the pictures)
Out & about in NY
Me with two members of the Chicago based Chuck Brothers DJ crew, Boogienite & Cee White (thanks for looking after me in Chicago. Boogie's BBQ food was awesome)
Chicago beauties Soul Sista & F-Me (Soul Sista's fish patties were to die for)
Me with Chicago DJ's Cee White & DJ Darryn

This track is Snooky & "Ease The Pain", which was produced by Kevin McCord. Kevin McCord was part of One Way, a group which also featured Al Hudson & Alicia Myers amongst others. In the early 80's they produced some nice synth drive, funk tracks such as "Pop What You Got" & "Mr Groove". This track was produced by McCord under the name Snooky & is a slice of early 80's funk in a similar type of style as Zapp. I'll do a label scan later tonight, when I get home. Play this loud & dance like Mc Hammer on crack.

I thought I spent quite a lot of my time & money digging for records, but some people take it to a whole other level. Found a cool blog the other day, where a guy spent 3 years in West Africa digging for records. He has posted various mixes of some of his finds. There are loads of afrobeat & African disco & funk mixes on there. I have just started checking out the mixes & there is some nice stuff. The blog is called Voodoo Funk & you can check it HERE

I am very pleased to present the latest guest mix for all that tune in to my site. I have really enjoyed previous guest mixes from both Elwood & Zernell, I hope you have too. The latest mix is from Brooklyn's Josh D, also known as Fox 50. Josh runs the excellent 100 Limousines site, which contains loads of quality mixes from both Josh & guests. You will see if you are a regular on my site, that I big up his site all the time, as it's one of my favourites on the net. If you have never been on his site you should check it out today. Anyway sincere thanks to Josh for spending the time to do the mix & also to send in scans of all the labels of the records that he used in his mix. He makes it easy for me to post his shit. As well as running his site you will find Josh is also a top quality DJ who plays all killers with no fillers. Anyway check out his mix & don't be afraid to send him shouts or feedback.

Here's the latest episode from me, I just did this real quick today, it's just me mainly playing 45's. It's mainly soul & disco tracks. I'll post a new mix in the next few weeks but until then I'll leave you with this.
Posted by P.SKILLZ at 21:51
I haven't posted much recently as I've been too busy. I will most likely post a mix this weekend of mainly modern soul & disco tracks if I get the time. Anyway in the mean time, I got a request off Edgar to post this track & I saw the record, for not much money, the other day so here it is. A nice 80's track mixed by Francois K, Starshine & "All I need is you". I'll do a label scan in the next few days if I get a chance.

Damn, just looked on Z-Share & my edit of Cashmere's Do It Any Way You Wanna appears to have had 12500+ downloads, this might be correct, but it seems strange when there has been less than 30000 people click on the site in total & all other posts seem to have had less than 1000 downloads each. Either way I suppose I'm glad so many people have checked it out.

I've just posted a mix on the Bring The Heat site. It's a DJ battle where 2 DJ's submit a 30 minute Disco mix & then people vote for which one they think is the best. Check out the mix on the site & vote if you like the mix.
VOTE FOR THE MIX YOU LIKE THE MOST
BATTLE ENDS: MARCH 23RD AT 12PM US CHICAGO TIME
PSKILLZ (NEWCASTLE, UK) VS DJCARLOSP (CHICAGO, IL)
CHECK THE MIX HERE
I won the battle with 78% of the vote, but to be fair the other mix was poor, so the victory is a bit of a hollow one.

I've been busy lately, so haven't had time to do any posts for a couple of weeks. I'm submitting a 30 minute Disco mix for a DJ Battle on the Bring the Heat site next week, so check it out & vote for me. I will also do some mixes for this site in the upcoming weeks. After the Disco mix I will probably do a mix of some classic Hip Hop joints from the early to mid 90's, so look out for that if you like Hip Hop. Anyway on the Disco theme, here is an awesome track from Suzy Q called I Can't Give You More. I can't give you much more than this, it's the shit. I also really like the classic Suzy Q track Get On Up & Do It Again. This is a bit more up tempo but is an absolute banger. Play this shit loud & get your dance on.

Just a quick note to say thanks to all that go on this site, from all over the world. I hope you like the music & mixes that are posted here. The aim of the site is simply to share what I consider to be good music, in a time when bland shite seems to be the norm. I don't do this in an effort to have my ego stroked, but comments & feedback make all the effort of running a site or sending in a mix more worthwhile. It's good to know people's view's on what we are doing. Therefore if you like any of the mixes or music please leave some feedback. Zernell & Elwood were both kind enough to donate mixes to the site, for free, for people to enjoy & even though both have had a fair few downloads, there have been few comments. It would be nice if people who liked their mixes sent them some shouts for their efforts. It will also encourage other guests to contribute in the future. Sincere thanks to all that do email & leave comments, but a few more people sharing views or even just saying thanks every now & again would be even better.

Here's the latest episode from me. This is a bit more up tempo than the previous ones. I got sent some tracks off Brooklyn producer Lorn, on Friday, so I made a mix on Sunday inspired by the tracks I had been sent. If you haven't heard any of Lorn's tracks then I suggest checking out his Myspace
The tracks he sent me were all made recently, but have an 80's feel to them, the rest of the mix is mainly 80's stuff. The mix was just made up on the spot so is not perfect, but it sounds OK. Enjoy the mix & send me some feedback.
Mr Flagio: Take A Chance
B-Beat Girls: For The Same Man
Lorn: My Single
Kosmic Light Force: Mystic Waves
Lorn: My Drum Machine
A.I.M.: Thailand Seeds
Kid Frost: Rough Cut
Judy Torres: No Reason To Cry
Gloria Estefan & Miami Sound Machine: Dr Beat
Lefturno: Out Of Sight
Patrick Cowley: Get A Little
Gino Soccio: Remember

If you saw my last post, you will see I advised you all to check out the Bring The Heat site, where you will find some of the best underground Disco mixes available, as well as DJ battles & forums. Well Zernell, who is one of the guys who was involved in the last DJ battle on the site, which was a classic battle by the way, has kindly sent me a mix to post on my site. The mix is called " Uhm... Who Is Zernell?" If you don't know, now you know. Check out the mix for a slice of bangin Disco from one of Chicago's finest. If you like the mix you can send Zernell shouts or feedback through the Bring The Heat site as well as if you leave comments here.

Last post tonight is Lords Of The Underground with Funky Child. A great track from what some call the golden period of Hip Hop. It's one of the best tracks to use the Skull Snaps break, although those drums make almost any track sound good. Always used to make people go demented when ever I played this out at a Hip Hop night. It's the shit.
Second post tonight is an absolute classic from 1982, Carol Williams with Can't Get Away (From Your Love). You won't want to get away from this track it's fookin bangin.
Posted by P.SKILLZ at 00:34
The first post tonight is Maceo & The JB's with Tighten Up (Live In Dallas - Edit). This is off an EP I got a few years ago which has edits of different funk tracks, not sure who did the edits but it's good shit. The edit of Soul Pride is also good as the drums are extended, I may post this at a later date. Any way check this track for some sick drum action. Come on drums.
Saturday, 19 January 2008
Here's the second mixshow from me. Again it's all mainly 80's stuff. I will post some more tracks in the next few days also. Drop me a message with some feedback. Last post tonight is "Techno Scratch" by Knights Of The Turntables. A classic Electro track for you to enjoy. I should have some new mixes to post this weekend also, so look out for them.
Posted by P.SKILLZ at 23:59
Third post tonight is "Party Groove" by Showbiz. The track is off the "Soul Clap" EP by Show & AG, which is one of the best Hip Hop EP's ever in my opinion. Showbiz is one of my favourite Hip Hop Producers also. This is a cut up, sample laden, instrumental, party groove & sounds excellent out in a club. Play it loud & get you're groove on.
Posted by P.SKILLZ at 23:49
Second post of the night is a Boogie classic from 1983, Colors & "Am I Gonna Be The One". Hot shit indeed for y'all.
Posted by P.SKILLZ at 23:40
I am going to post a mixed bag of tracks tonight. Starting with a classic from 1980, "You're Too Late" by Fantasy. There is a nice mix from Kiss FM from New Years Eve 1980 of all the top tracks from that year, which was done by Tony Humphries & Shep Pettibone. I think you can still get the mix on: http://www.deephousepage.com/. This is one of the highlights of the mix for me, but there are so many good tracks on there. Anyway still sounds class today in my book so enjoy.
